The 18th century Temple of the Tooth, built as a palace for Sri Viraparakrama Narendrasinha, the last Sinhalese king of Lanka, it was converted soon after into a shrine to house the Tooth Relic of the Buddha.

Also known as the Thahanci Kele (or Forbidden Forest), this 257-acre sanctuary was once a private reserve of the Kandyan royal family, and closed to commoners. Sri Lanka, October 2018.

In the Steps of the Pansakulikas

A monk descends Ritigala Mountain where, in the 9th century, King Sena of Anuradhapura built a monastery for the Pansakulikas or “Rag Robes”, a particularly ascetic order of Buddhist monks who fashioned their robes from the shrouds of the dead, scavenged from graves and funeral pyres. Shot in December 2017.
