Mango Season

Mangoes, and the ever-in-season Sri Lankan bananas (or plantains, as they’re commonly called here), being sold from a cart on Central Road, in Wolvendaal, in October 2022.* If you aren’t ready to take them home to ripen to sweetness, a case of exploding mangoes may be instantly had with the liberal sprinkling of chilli and salt.

Eyes in the Past

Poosari, Naagapoosani Amman Kovil, Nainativu Island. March 2014.* The old priest tending to devotees at an outside shrine, would stand perfectly still after each batch of worshippers had moved on, his face expressionless, eyes seeming to watch something far in the past. He would rouse himself to action each time he was approached, then drift off again when no longer needed.

The Protest of a Tired People

More than a month of protests, Parliamentary action, and Supreme Court rulings, have failed so far to remove the Mahinda Rajapakse government which took power in a political coup triggered by President Maithripala Sirisena. On October 26th, the president sacked the democratically elected prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and his entire cabinet, and appointed opposition MP, and former president, Mahinda Rajapakse as PM.
