Sprattus Sprattus

Sprats by Son of the Morning Light on 500px.com
Sackfuls of dried sprats sit in the open air at a wholesaler’s on Keyzer Street, in the Pettah Market. This tiny foraging fish is a traditional part of Sri Lankan cuisine, and is known locally as halmasso (“rice flies”, in Sinhalese) and “neththili” (in Tamil). Halmassa (the singular form) is also the name of a town in the Sabaragamuwa Province. Colombo, October 2017.

“Built in the late 1970s, shortly after Sri Lanka’s abandonment of its experiment with Socialism, the Colpetty Market seemed to epitomise the access that the new open economy was according its citizens. The market quickly gained a reputation as the place to go for the best goodies from all over the world. It’s a reputation that has now largely faded, but for the explorer, the market still offers some surprises…”
