Prince and 2nd Cross streets, Pettah. January 2023. If there ever had been a Tintin in Ceylon, this would be the place in one of those large illustrations a la The Calculus Affair or Tintin in Tibet.

Years ago, in a piece for Outlook India, I wrote, ‘Everything in Sri Lanka is either sweet or spicy. Often both. Our people; our tea.’ And that’s exactly what Rasa’s tea is like; lip-burning hot, tongue-stinging gingery, and so thick with sugar that my spit makes the filter of my Gold Leaf sticky. Prince Street, Pettah. September 2022.

Rasa and an assistant open their breakfast stall on the corner of Prince and 2nd Cross streets, serving tea and spicy beef and onion sandwiches. Pettah, September 2022. I love the blue wood often seen in these small wayside ’boutiques’. I’ve no idea why blue is popular. Even when I lived in Europe, a blue Ikea bookshelf instantly brought back memories of Mutwal and Kotahena, and I bought it.
