Holy Smoke
A Wolfendhal Street shopkeeper lights a bowl of incense; a daily ritual at the opening of business. The smoke will then be carried through the premises, with the dual purpose of showing devotion to the local deities and driving out out any pests (natural or supernatural) that might have sneaked in during the night. Hulftsdorp, Colombo. October 2022.

Mango Season
Mangoes, and the ever-in-season Sri Lankan bananas (or plantains, as they’re commonly called here), being sold from a cart on Central Road, in Wolvendaal, in October 2022.* If you aren’t ready to take them home to ripen to sweetness, a case of exploding mangoes may be instantly had with the liberal sprinkling of chilli and salt.

Breakfast in Pettah #3
Rasa and an assistant open their breakfast stall on the corner of Prince and 2nd Cross streets, serving tea and spicy beef and onion sandwiches. Pettah, September 2022. I love the blue wood often seen in these small wayside ’boutiques’. I’ve no idea why blue is popular. Even when I lived in Europe, a blue Ikea bookshelf instantly brought back memories of Mutwal and Kotahena, and I bought it.
