A Wolfendhal Street shopkeeper lights a bowl of incense; a daily ritual at the opening of business. The smoke will then be carried through the premises, with the dual purpose of showing devotion to the local deities and driving out out any pests (natural or supernatural) that might have sneaked in during the night. Hulftsdorp, Colombo. October 2022.

Sacrificial Smoke #2

Worshippers at the Mayurapathi Sri Bathrakali Amman Kovil, Havelock Town, Colombo. I slowed down the shutter speed by a click to get the faces of the young men and a bit of the interior of the kovil but, unfortunately, I’ve ended up blowing the highlights a bit. And, unlike with digital RAW files, there’s no recovering any details from a negative. Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 and Kodak Tri-X 400 film, with a 35-70mm MC lens, at 70mm, 1/500, and f/4.5.
