Sri Lanka Navy sailors lower the national flag at sundown in a twice-daily ceremony at the Galle Face Green, close to the country’s main harbour and naval base near the Colombo Fort. Galle Face, with its pier and promenade — the latter created during the days of the British Empire — is a popular evening venue for “Colombites”, and the military ceremony known as beating retreat attracts a fair share of curious onlookers.
