A silversmith, in a lapidary in Meetiyagoda, flattens silver into strips between the cylinders of a hand-operated roller. Silver is a popular metal used in creating moonstone jewellery, and Meetiyagoda, in southern Sri Lanka, is the world’s primary source of blue moonstones; mined since 1906 in ten small family-owned shaft mines. Shot on assignment for Explore Sri Lanka magazine. My photo story, ‘Moonstones of Meetiyagoda‘, ran in the February 2014 issue.

A lapidarist works at his motorised wheel in Meetiyagoda, crafting and finessing a rare blue moonstone. Pick up one of these beautiful gemstones anywhere in the world, and the chances are it would have come from this small village in southwestern Sri Lanka, where it is mined by hand in a few primitive waterlogged shaft mines, as it has been since 1906. In the background are basins of sorted pegmatite gravel which contain the sought after moonstones, waiting their turn on the wheel. Shot on assignment for Explore Sri Lanka magazine.
