Morning Tea in Pettah #2

Years ago, in a piece for Outlook India, I wrote, ‘Everything in Sri Lanka is either sweet or spicy. Often both. Our people; our tea.’ And that’s exactly what Rasa’s tea is like; lip-burning hot, tongue-stinging gingery, and so thick with sugar that my spit makes the filter of my Gold Leaf sticky. Shore By O! on Mt Lavinia Beach, just south of Colombo City, in August 2020; usually a popular place for sundowners, with both locals and international travellers crowding the tables. As Sri Lanka comes out of its latest period of round-the-clock lockdown, a year on, pubs and bars haven’t been allowed to open after they were ordered shut in mid-May.

Virtual Restauranting

The staff behind the counter of an empty Colombo diner are as busy as ever, filling delivery orders. In a city with a high demand for food delivery even before the Corona Pandemic, delivery has now taken over eating out. Many restaurants have no dine in customers at all, and operate solely on delivery. Sri Lanka, Christmas 2020.
