Deva Veediya, Kandy #11

https://sonofthemorninglight.files.wordpress.com/2021/06/4m8a8417.jpg
A row of derelict Victorian administrative buildings in Kandy, not dissimilar in style and vintage from the De Soyza Building in Colombo that has recently gathered some online outrage at its imminent destruction. The buildings on Deva Veediya have become an Instagrammable feature of Kandyan urban grunge and, in spite of being right next door to the Temple of the Tooth and St Paul’s, have been clearly neglected for many years, providing cheap offices for local lawyers whose name boards festoon their facade. In this photograph, Shermaine Willis and Anuradha Perera pose for Ashraff Associates and The Radh Kandy, in October 2018.

Designed by the Rev LG Gaster, and inspired by the Embekke Devale, the chapel was, in 1935, pioneering for its use of Sinhalese architecture in a Christian worship site. The famous Anglican cathedrals of Christ the King, in Kurunegala, and Christ the Living Saviour, in Colombo, both of vernacular style, and completed in 1960 and 1970 respectively, may not have looked the way they do if not for the Trinity College Chapel.

Still often referred to as the Thahanci Kele, or ‘Forbidden Forest’, it was once a private reserve of the Kandyan royal family, and closed to commoners.

The 257-acre Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve is still sometimes referred to by its ancient name, the Thahanci Kele, or ‘forbidden forest’; once a private reserve of the Kandyan royal family, and closed to commoners. Incredibly located within walking distance of the city center, the Udawatta Kele of today provides visitors a chance to walk or cycle along narrow paths through dense highland rain forest.
